LAFD Captain Dwayne Laurent, Ambassador to the Pacific Palisades, will join us to discuss the Department’s role across the wildfire lifecycle—from prevention and mitigation to emergency response and recovery. We’ll also talk about how LAFD works with MySafe:LA and why effective wildfire preparedness requires fire agencies, community organizations, and residents to work together before the next emergency.
We’ll also examine a potentially significant development for communities in and around the Santa Monica Mountains: Los Angeles County’s consideration of a wildfire Joint Powers Authority (JPA). What is a JPA? Why is the County considering one, and what could it mean for the communities it is intended to serve?
Our colleagues from CORE (Community Organized Relief Effort) will introduce their Fire Safe Foothills program, including free wildfire preparedness workshops and community organizing support in the San Gabriel Valley, Antelope Valley, and Angeles National Forest.
And importantly, we’ll share updates on what comes next—including MySafe:LA/LAFD wildfire evacuation training workshops beginning in September, our wildfire community survey, and new resources designed to help Los Angeles residents become better prepared and more resilient.
Wildfire resilience isn’t something government or the fire department can accomplish alone. Residents have a role, too. Understanding the risk, knowing what resources are available, preparing your household, and participating in the decisions affecting your community are all part of the solution.
This meeting is open to the public, and participants will have an opportunity to ask questions during the public comment period.
We hope you’ll join us on August 20, and take another important step toward making your home, your neighborhood, and Los Angeles better prepared for wildfire.
