Compost That Pumpkin!

Posted on 10/20/2020

Do you plan to compost your pumpkin after Halloween?

Make a plan to recycle and keep those pumpkins out of the landfill after the holiday. As you're carving, remember that you can use the flesh to make a number of different food items (pies, soups, muffins), and the seeds can be roasted or planted in your garden.

When decorating your Jack-o-Lanterns, please avoid putting paint, glitter, or other non-organic materials on the outside of the pumpkin because this makes it more difficult and potentially toxic/hazardous to compost. A candle holder also helps to prevent excess wax from running off inside of the pumpkin (that also negatively affects composting).

After your pumpkin has fulfilled its Halloween destiny, it will make a great nitrogen-rich source to add to your compost! If you don't compost at home, look for a friend or community garden that might be able to give your pumpkin a second life in the form of compost.
